How to move an eSIM to a new phone
Move an eSIM to a new phone with less risk: confirm transfer support, protect your number, keep the old phone nearby and test the new line.
Treat an eSIM move as a controlled number transfer, not as copying a file. Some carriers support an on-device transfer between eligible phones. Others require a new QR code, a carrier app, or customer support. The new phone’s eSIM hardware alone does not decide the outcome.
Make the move before erasing anything
Confirm that both phones have current software where required, that you know the account credentials, and that the new phone’s exact regional model works with your carrier. Keep the old device charged, unlocked, close by, and connected as the manufacturer instructs. Do not factory-reset it until calls, texts, and data work on the new phone.
Apple’s Quick Transfer instructions require carrier support plus particular account, device-passcode, proximity, Bluetooth, and software conditions; when the new plan activates, the previous SIM is deactivated. That is convenient when available, but it is not a promise that every number can move without carrier involvement.
Follow one supported path
Choose the carrier’s official path, then complete only the prompts that match your old and new phones. Google says automatic Pixel transfer needs Android 12 or later, current Google Play services, and screen lock on both devices; it also notes that carrier processes can differ. If the transfer is not detected or repeatedly fails, pause and contact the carrier instead of uninstalling profiles at random.
A profile issued for travel data may have its own reinstall and validity rules. Do not assume it transfers with your main phone number. Open that provider’s terms, and consider whether a fresh profile is required.
Test the outcome deliberately
Turn off Wi-Fi and load a small page. Make a call and send a text if the plan includes them. Check which line supplies data and whether the old phone has lost service as expected. Keep account recovery options current after the transfer.
Need to add a second line rather than replace the first? Read using eSIM and physical SIM together. If your old service is on a card and the new phone supports conversion, compare the carrier process in switch from physical SIM to eSIM. For a transfer that crosses a lock or regional compatibility boundary, return to how to check eSIM compatibility.
