Using eSIM and physical SIM together
Learn how to set up a dual-SIM phone with eSIM and physical SIM, choose data and call lines, and avoid surprise travel charges.
A phone that supports both eSIM and a physical SIM can separate a home number from another plan. That can be helpful for travel, work, or testing a new service. It is not a promise that every combination will work: the exact handset, regional variant, software, carrier, and plan determine how many lines can be installed and active and what each line can do.
Give each line one job
Before adding a second line, write down the role for each: calls and SMS, mobile data, or both. Label them clearly in the phone settings. A simple arrangement is “Home” for your normal number and “Travel data” for the second line. Then explicitly select which line handles mobile data before leaving Wi-Fi.
Samsung’s documented SIM manager allows enabled SIMs to be customized, a preferred line to be selected for features such as calls, and a data line to be chosen. It also warns that simultaneous nano-SIM and eSIM use may lead to slower data transfers in some areas. Menu names and features differ across models, so use the manufacturer’s guide for your own device.
Avoid the common travel surprise
Keeping a home line on can be useful for messages, but it may also allow roaming activity under that plan’s terms. Review whether the device has data switching, which line has data roaming enabled, and whether your home plan has a travel allowance. Turning off a line is different from merely not selecting it as the primary data line.
Do a test before departure. With Wi-Fi off, confirm the intended data indicator appears, make a small data request, and then check that the other line behaves as you expect. Do not rely on a dual-SIM icon alone.
Keep the setup reversible
Do not delete a working eSIM just to reduce clutter before you have recorded how to reinstall it. A provider may require a new activation code. If you are adding a travel profile, follow how to activate your first eSIM and compare it with travel eSIM vs local physical SIM.
If the second line is a physical card, keep the tray dry, use the correct card size, and store the original card packaging until service is confirmed. If your phone does not support the desired dual-line arrangement, use the practical alternatives in when a physical SIM is the better choice.
